Inklings // April 2025
Another Inklings! I have a response from a book this time, for a change. (Check rules for linking up here!)
This month's prompt is:
A scene with roses in book or film.
I was very happy to see this prompt, as I love roses! I have some rose plants which I obsess over, rather. You see, in our old house, we had four or five beautiful rose bushes, and when we moved, I took cuttings. I didn't take enough care of them over the first winter, and they nearly died, so I am now rather over-the-top about them...
Anyway, while I have plenty of roses in the garden, it was surprisingly hard to find a scene from a film or book that had roses in it: I probably haven't watched/read the right things, as there must be some out there! I finally thought of Meg's wedding in Good Wives. So, without further ado, here is the section:
The June roses over the porch were awake bright and early on that morning, rejoicing with all their hearts in the cloudless sunshine, like friendly little neighbors, as they were. Quite flushed with excitement were their ruddy faces, as they swung in the wind, whispering to one another what they had seen; for some peeped in at the dining-room windows, where the feast was spread, some climbed up to nod and smile at the sisters as they dressed the bride, others waved a welcome to those who came and went on various errands in garden, porch, and hall, and all, from the rosiest full-blown flower to the palest baby-bud, offered their tribute of beauty and fragrance to the gentle mistress who had loved and tended them so long.
Meg looked very like a rose herself; for all that was best and sweetest in heart and soul seemed to bloom into her face that day, making it fair and tender, with a charm more beautiful than beauty.
There you go! Only a short one, but hopefully you enjoyed it.
Enjoy the May sunshine!
Oh, what a sweet choice! When you mentioned where it was from my thoughts first went to the scene with Amy and Laurie involving roses (which (as you probably know, since I know we both enjoy rummaging through others' archives xD) Miss March did for an Inklings once upon a time). I didn't even remember this passage, so thanks for reminding me! :D
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm glad it reminded you! I love this particular chapter of Good Wives.
DeleteGreat post, Cecilia!
ReplyDeleteI loved the part of the passage where Meg is compared to a rose. Alcott almost sounds like an American Anne Shirley in that sentence!
