What to knit next?
I love knitting. It's really portable, it's really versatile, and "once you have the notes in your head you can sing a million different tunes, by mixing them up." Seriously, it's very easy to make up your own colour schemes, patterns in the garment, and so on.
I have several other posts in progress, but I am very busy at the moment (we're moving) so I have next to no time for blogging, which is rather vexatious. I do have time for knitting, though, as I can do it anywhere. I did a lot in the car the other day, for instance, and I just finished the project I was working on then: a slipover/sleeveless jumper for a relative.
My problem now is, however, finding the right project, as I have a lot of yarn, but not enough of any particular colour to make an entire large item. I searched, therefore, for a project that could look scrappy but still nice and stylish and generally pleasant.
The first project I found was a rather glamourous vintage sleeveless jumper pattern for women:
I found the pattern here
The problem is, I don't think it would be very good in stripes. Maybe I could do each section up the front in a different colour?! I think that might just be rather mad. Then, I abandoned looking for scrap-friendly patterns and just had a good old rummage through the patterns on the same website. How about this shawl:
or this jumper?
I then spent some time looking on another website and found some pretty things: a jumper (with cables on it - I love cabled jumpers, and if I'm going to spend my time knitting something, it has to look different to a shop-bought product)...
I found it here
a very pretty lacy collar (and I think that it would add some warmth over the winter, like a more elegant version of a scarf, though obviously not as warm. And it's not the same thing. Never mind.);
I found the pattern here
And this, which is ever so slightly tacky but also very fun:

I should probably say at this point, by the way, none of these are affiliate links...As anyone who has ever worn hand-knitted socks will testify, they are extremely comfortable. They are also fun to knit, and extremely underrated. However, it isn't worth knitting socks that look like a shop-bought sock, in my opinion - so why not make something like this?
Or this:
Or I could make an enormous scarf:
However, the sweetest thing I saw on this website was this set:
You see? Isn't it adorable?! I don't know to whom I could give it, but it is just so sweet that I might have to make it. I could at least make the blanket... Oh, and it uses small amounts of yarn - perfect! I was never that keen on stripy things, anyway...
As I have to go now, I will leave it there. Which is your favourite? Do you have any knitting patterns you'd recommend? I'm always keen to have any excuse for looking at craft websites!
I really enjoyed this post, Cecilia!
ReplyDeleteAll of the options are so pretty! My favourite is the sleeveless jumper pattern... but I am also quite partial to the shawl - it reminds me of 40s films!
Alas, I do not have any knitting patterns to recommend!
Thank you! Yes, I love the sleeveless jumper - it's so stylish. The shawl is gorgeous, and you're right: it is like something from a 40's film! I think one could almost wear it with an evening dress for a very vintage look (if one had the opportunity to wear an evening dress, which sadly I don't!).
DeleteAww, what a fun post! These are all such neat finds. I really like the jumper and the socks--both cute in different ways. And the baby set of course 🥰 I haven't knit since I was eight, but I do so love to see other people's creative projects!
ReplyDeleteI hope your move is as smooth, safe, and un-stressful as possible!
They are cute, aren't they? There are just so many things to choose from! The baby set IS adorable, isn't it?
DeleteThank you! It's actually going surprisingly well so far...
I'm so glad to hear that! <3
DeleteI am immensely impressed that you wrote ANY blog post while moving, honestly.
ReplyDelete(Also, as a side note, I love the word "vexatious." I should use it more often.)
I think my favorite pattern is the first vintage vest. It has such a simple classy look -I think it's lovely. (I agree that it wouldn't work in stripes, though.) My other favorite is the lacey collar; I've actually been thinking about making a vintage collar myself (though crocheted, since I'm much better at crocheting than knitting)! I think collars can add a touch of elegance to plain tops and just lend a certain something to an outfit.
Whichever you choose to work on, I hope you enjoy your knitting amid all the bustle and annoyance of moving! <3
Ha, thank you - it's a welcome break from packing!
DeleteThat vest is amazing - like you say, it's classy and simple (though not something destined to be made in stripes). The collar is beautiful too, and it would be a nice, quick thing to make when I wanted a break from a bigger project; and collars are so elegant.
Thank you! Moving is going fairly well so far, so much so that I feel like something is wrong - we must have missed something somewhere ;)
