Beautiful People Questionnaires: Dr Francis Carew
I'm back with some more Beautiful People questions! I've been feeling pretty uninspired when it comes to this story lately, and rather out of touch with my characters, so I'm hoping to help that by doing some of these. (The first BPQ post I did is here.) The story, set in Regency times, could be labelled a romance, but I like to think it's about the characters more than the romance. At least, that's what I want it to be.
The character I'm doing the questions for today is Dr Francis Carew, and I may well do a lot of questions for this character as I feel like I need to flesh him out a little more...
First, though, what does he look like? A cross between this:
Francis Sebastian Carew.
Does his name have a special meaning?
Francis was his grandfather's name, and Sebastian was the name of his uncle who died at a young age (and, entirely coincidentally, one of my favourite names).
How old is he?
He is twenty-eight at the beginning of the book.
Does he have a methodical or disorganized personality?
He has an extremely methodical personality, but he isn't rigid or cold, just organised.
Does he think inside himself more than he talks to his friends (more importantly, does he actually have friends)?
He does have some friends, but he thinks inside himself more than he talks to them. He is a good conversationalist, but he is reserved.
Is there something he is afraid of?
He's a doctor, and he's always afraid, despite his competence, that he will harm a patient. He also struggles to be objective when a patient dies. He is afraid of harming those he loves by his actions.
Does he write, dream, dance, sing, or photograph?
He used to write essays and had a few published. He doesn't sing. He can dance well.
Does he/she see the big picture or live in the moment?
He sees the big picture and doesn't worry about it, unless there is someone else in danger.
Is he a perfectionist?
Yes! He's less of one than he used to be, however.
What does his handwriting look like (round, slanted, curly, skinny, sloppy, neat,
decorative, etc.)?
It is slanted, thin, and legible if not beautiful.
Favorite animal?
He likes dogs.
Does he have any pets?
He had a dog when he was a child.
Does he have any siblings? How many? Where does he fit in?
He has an older brother, Nicholas Carew, and he had an older stepsister who died.
Favourite season of the year?
Spring! He loves the fresh spring air and seeing the natural world change around him. Autumn and winter depress him. He is indifferent to summer.
What's his favourite food?
He likes simple, wholesome food, such as bread with cheese and pickles, pies, and so on. Oh, and he likes good cheese.
Is he a Christian?
Yes, though I'm not sure which denomination. He is the sort of person who wouldn't be a member of the established church just because it's the social norm, but would reason his way independently to what he thought was the truth.
What does he absolutely hate?
Letting social convention getting in the way of what is necessary at a particular moment.
What does he enjoy learning about?
He's interested in the natural world in a scientific sense, and also in the cultures of other countries.
What is something he has always secretly dreamed of doing, but thought impossible?
He always wanted to sail round the world. And he would do it in an amazingly normal way.
Is he a night owl or a morning person?
He's a night owl!
Does he say everything that pops into his head, or leave a lot unsaid?
He leaves a lot unsaid, which makes what he does say a lot more forceful.
What are his nervous habits?
He bites his thumbnail and frowns.
What languages does he speak?
English, French, Italian, and a bit of Spanish; he loves learning languages and it's useful, so he tries to learn bits of everything.
What is his biggest mistake?
When he went to university, he ignored his stepsister as he unfairly resented her behaviour towards him.
What did he play with the most as a child?
He enjoyed reading and playing games based on his books.
What are his thoughts on politics?
Patriotic but not blindly so, conservative but sees the need for reform, cynical about the monarchy at his time but still in favour of monarchy as a concept and constitutional monarchy as the means of governance for England.
If he were falsely accused of murder, what would he do? How would he react?
He would calmly try to clear his name, and if he couldn't, he would prepare for death. He's religious deep down, so that would console him.

That was a lot of questions, but it makes me more at home with him now!
What do you think? Have you got some sort of idea of Dr Carew's character? Would you like to meet him?
Hi Cecilia!
ReplyDeleteDr. Carew sounds like a very interesting character! Is he in the same book as Elizabeth?
I definitely have an idea of Dr Carew's character, and I can't wait to learn more about this Regency novel of yours. :)
Yes, I would like to meet him so I can ask him more questions about his life as a doctor in the Regency time period.
Hi Liz!
DeleteYes, Dr. Carew is in the same novel as Elizabeth. Oh, I'm glad you do! I must see about sharing more about the book sometime soon.
I know, being a doctor at that time would be interesting; it would be fun to ask him about his job ;)
Oh, I was already picturing him very similarly to your reference pictures! That makes me happy. :D And the picture that your answers create of him as a character is quite similar to how I'd been picturing him, too.
ReplyDelete(I don't know if this helps at all, but when I'm feeling stuck in a story I sometimes try to really draw it back to the characters...look at the scene and try to figure out what I really think the character would do, even if it doesn't align with how I want the story to go. (Speaking of which, I am very sorry not to have responded to your email yet...I've been rather swamped in busy-ness! The email's nearly all written, so you should finally be getting it soon :P))
Oh, that makes me happy too :D I'm glad he seems similar to how you thought of him; I didn't want there to be a "book Dr. Carew" and a "BPQ Dr. Carew"!
DeleteThat's a really helpful tip, thank you! It's great to have met, finally, some other people who like writing and can help with it :D (And don't worry, I know what it's like! Hopefully, it's good busy-ness.)
Oohohoh, a BPQ!! And such a splendid one, I like your Dr. Carew more and more.... We are more alike than I thought, he and I, and I do feel like I know him much better now too! (And yes, I should like to meet him ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like him :) Oh, it's excellent you feel like you know him! I'm hoping that my feeling better acquainted with him will translate to the next bit of writing I do. (I should like to meet him too ;) )
