Inklings // July 2025
My next Little Women post is on the way! In the meantime, here's this month's Inklings post (check the rules for linking up here).
This month's prompt is:
A sword duelling scene in book or film
Yes, I know I did this film last month, but I love it and this is the duel to end all duels! Yes, it's The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). (Note: This video spoils the ending of the film :) )
Watch out for the Sheriff of Nottingham drawing his sword and darting behind Prince John to hide, Sir Guy of Gisborne's fantastically vibrant costume, and the Bishop of the Black Canon's probably inaccurate but very fun purple chasuble. (I have a feeling that the Bishop at a coronation would have worn white.)
Oh, and of course, enjoy the swordplay.
Hi Cecilia!
ReplyDeleteSuch a brilliant piece of swordplay! It's amazing to see what actors did before modern special effects and CGI.
Wonderful post! :)
I know! It's so impressive to think they did so much themselves. I've heard that Basil Rathbone (Sir Guy) was a champion fencer - I think you can really tell.
DeleteWhy thank you! 😀
As it happened, I did exactly as you said, and enjoyed the swordplay😂 Robin Hood is very sporting, isn't he?? To give the other fellow a chance to get his sword again... Very admirable, I say. But then, he IS Robin Hood!
ReplyDeleteSir Guy Of Gisborne DID don his best feathers for the event, didn't he?? I wonder why I don't remember him🤨
Ooh, review!! (Or the long post on how much you love it. Which is also quite alright with me, I myself love hearing people talk about movies they can't get enough of, it makes the whole thing so much fun😂)
Oh, yes, isn't he sporting? This film always makes me want to learn how to fence, something I wouldn't actually be very good at...
DeleteI know! The main thing I remember about Sir Guy in this film is how gorgeously bright his clothes are! In another part, he has this rich green robe and cloak with a silver and emerald clasp...
Oh, I love that too! I'm thinking I might end up with rather a lot of film reviews on here... xD
Ooh, wouldn't that be quite the hobby to have under your belt?? Anyone can take karate classes, but fencing!! It makes me think of Jo March when Laurie tells her he's taking fencing lessons😄
DeleteOoh, something about the words Rich Green Cloak and Silver And Emerald And Clasp just does such storyish things to my imagination...
You might at that😄 Though I can't imagine anyone raising any particular objections to it ;)
Oh, you've reminded me of that bit in Little Women - I must stop watching film versions for long enough to reread the book! Yes, wouldn't it be amazing to be able to say to people that you can fence?
DeleteIt does mine, too! One of the fun things about this film is how gorgeous the costumes are! (Heh, well, having said I'd end up with a lot of film reviews, I probably won't actually have time to write them... you never know, though!)
Hehe, and I still have not seen the movie. ;P
ReplyDelete(I had heard that too from Noddy, that Basil Rathbone was a sword-fighter in real life! Apparently he tended to be much better than the actors who they'd have defeat him in sword-fights in films, which is rather funny xD)
Oh, that is funny! It probably took skill to pretend to be worse than he actually was... It must be so fun to be able to fence (words she never thought she'd say ;) )
