Completed project!
Vintage skirt and blouse completed!
I finished the black circle skirt!!
If you ever read this post, you'll know I was planning to sew a black needlecord skirt, together with a vintage blouse. I finished the blouse several weeks ago, and eventually decided to sew the skirt out of brushed cotton as the needlecord didn't show any signs of coming back into stock soon. (It still hasn't.)
I was a little afraid that the brushed cotton would look rather like pajamas, but it actually worked surprisingly well! Because there's more body to it, it drapes nicely, and, as I adjusted the pattern pieces slightly, the fit is good too.
I forgot to take any photos of the sewing process, but it went smoothly. Brushed cotton was surprisingly easy to sew, so easy that I'm planning to make some brushed cotton pajamas soon. The only tricky moment was fitting the waistband. Though I'd altered the other pieces, I hadn't altered the waistband piece. This resulted in a slightly warped fit to the back of the waistband, but I was pleased with the front of the skirt so decided to leave it as it was.
This has to be my favourite skirt I own. It's vintage, it fits perfectly, it goes with everything, it's swishy enough to make me feel slightly Victorian - what's not to love?
On to the next project - a dress for my sister! I'm hoping to sew Christmas dresses for myself and my two sisters... if anyone has any pattern suggestions, let me know in the comments!
Very nice vintage outfit! Good job. I love circle skirts.
ReplyDeleteI am not very knowledgeable about different types of fabric finishes. I'll pick up what I can from what you said and put brushed cotton. I'd like to learn these terms.
Oh, that is so sweet that you want to see dresses for your sisters! I have seen dresses for my sisters in the past and they always loved them. I sewed the Butterick 5315 for a couple of my sisters. I really love that pattern. I've made it 5 times and I have two more cut out and ready to sew. It's vintage style with a circle skirt or pleated skirt, fitted bodice with buttons and a peter pan collar. I don't know if they still sell the pattern. I have had mine for 15 years. If they don't and you'd like to use it, maybe you could find it second hand.
Thank you!! I love circle skirts too :)
DeleteBrushed cotton is also known as flannel, I think... the amount of different names certain fabric types have is rather confusing, I find.
I just looked up that pattern and it looks gorgeous! I might look out for it in charity shops/Vinted... that sort of vintage or vintage inspired dress is my favourite. I bet your sisters loved the dresses you made for them!
Ooh, how exciting! It looks lovely. Pleated and/or swishy skirts are just The Best...and it goes so well with your vintage blouse. :D I look forward to seeing your Christmas dresses!
ReplyDeleteThey are The Best, aren't they! Thank you :D I'm pleased with how it turned out.
DeleteI'm looking forward to making them - if the zip I ordered ages ago decides it would like to arrive at some point it would also be helpful xD
